Since the alphabet is often taught and learned in early childhood education, beginning adult ESL learners are often surprised to see it is one of the first things taught in beginning ESL courses. Adults need to be taught differently than children.

First we will review adult alphabet flash cards covering all 26 letters of the alphabet, both uppercase and lowercase.
Then we subdivide the alphabet into consonants and vowels emphasizing the long and short vowel pronunciations. To get an immediate familiarity with consonants and vowels we look at short, 3-letter CVC words.
